The Tribune had the most incredible stories of the battle off Savo Island on the night of October 11. One Japanese warship single-handedly sank two A-class cruisers (one "vanished instantly") and one destroyer. Exploits of Japanese airmen are equally incredible. The last paragraph of one pilot's account of meeting 80 Grummans: "Our gunner's aim was good as he hit the Grumman's magazine compartment. Not only did the plane explode but, lucky for us, shattered bomb fragments hit two other enemy planes. When the air duel was over we had shot down 37 Grummans." It's a wonder they haven't won the war already. |
