Schaer greeted me this morning with, "Well, I see you're still out." As a matter of fact, with everyone else in, business is booming — P1,000 in sales today and probably yesterday. Speaking of which, the following is too rich, even for the Tribune: Borneo natives have learned to sing Japanese anthems.... The writer observed 'with his own eyes' the sincerity with which the natives welcomed the Japanese troops with lemonade and candies wrapped in leaves, and sang for us Kimigayo [national anthem] and Aikoku Koshin Kyoku [Patriotic Marching Song]. When we were about to leave they kindly suggested that we take with us hogs and chickens.... The writer noticed some aged people with joined hands; God knows how much they rejoiced at the sight of the Japanese. Ignacio Javier continues his diatribe in the Tribune: "The surprising thing is that the Japanese navy has lost only two aircraft carriers, small ones at Midway." (They lost four.) |
