"Siege Lines Tightening Around Stalingrad. Non-stop Air Assaults Cause Many Fires — Reds throw in heavy reinforcements." So much for the city being "sealed." I received a note at last from Joe today, dated August 26, Cabanatuan, acknowledging receipt of the P50 I sent him on August 22 — he didn't get the medicines. In a pinch, he added that if I couldn't afford to send more money, he could make it last three months. Well, more is on the way anyway. Joe said he was being treated all right. He's had his share of minor ailments that have kept him on his back for only four days. He works at cultivating vegetables and even plays softball and volleyball. Besides medicines, he asked for his tennis shoes and chocolate. |
