Stormy weather kept me awake last night thinking about Maurice on that little batel. This morning, the Japanese tested the air raid siren again atop the University Club in the Luneta. Manilans shook their heads knowingly. A fellow from Batangas said he and many others saw two Japanese tankers ablaze within sight of land. I heard this two days ago but dismissed it as rumor. Well, today a fellow just arrived on a batel from the south and told Schaer his sailboat was stopped by a U.S. sub. The commander told them to stay off the seas as it was a pain for him to come up and inspect them all. As a parting shot he added, "You can tell your friends we've just sunk two tankers and a cargo vessel." |
