Funny article in La Vanguardia about the taking of Kinhwa†. The region has an annual output of 760,000 pigs, and Kinhwa itself, "famous for its well-smoked ham," produces 106,000. The Japanese found the place smoky because of the usual scorched earth tactics, but not one cochino could be found running around. On other news, 80,000 are expected to enroll for school tomorrow; rice ration cards are being given out, and the "Public is Urged to Limit Consumption to Minimum." I dropped in to Plaza Lunch this morning and ordered a slice of pineapple for 30 centavos — easily forty times what the Japanese force growers to sell it for. † Jinhua, China |
