La Vanguardia printed a fascinating transcript of the Singapore surrender negotiations. Yamashita insisted on unconditional surrender, or else. Percival could only say, "Yes." Domei Geneva reports the Japanese government informed the International Red Cross that it would treat POWs according to the Geneva Convention, "even though it is not obliged to." A potentially dangerous scene developed today when a carromata damaged the door of an officer's car. After a getting a beating, the bleeding cochero was ordered to fix the car door. When he couldn't the officer beat him again until he fell then administered the imperial boot. One cool mind kept the hostile crowd from going berserk. Elsewhere, a friend of mine presented his pass to a guard while smoking a cigarette, and just for that, the guard burned his fingers with it — the third case I've heard of. By these acts, the Japanese have completely undermined their efforts to paint the war as one of Asian liberation. |
