Adull day. Worked at Dad’s store in the morning. A German came in to buy fabric to make a swastika flag (most Axis nationals are putting flags on their cars). He had been briefly interned and was pleased to be free again. — “First I was worried, and now...” — “Happy?” I asked. — “Oh no, not happy...” he said, giving me the impression that he didn’t like the Japanese either. Long bike ride in the afternoon. Found it difficult to buy anything as most stores were closed. The Japanese are now in full control of the news. Yesterday, local radio described their arrival this way: “Filipinos lined the streets and cheered.” I saw only frozen silence. |
