November 12-13, 1941 — Around midnight, Manila time

Dozed off right after the usual 2315 stock quotations from KGEI San Francisco, though found myself half-listening to a familiar voice at 0100: “And here’s the news....” What followed was some innocuous piece about Japan not abrogating its non-aggression pacts, but somehow, it struck me as the last straw.

That was my moment of revelation: Japan would fight! As a stockbroker, it was my paramount obligation to place my clients’ investments on a war footing. As I walked to the office later that morning, I found myself repeating a silent litany:
